Lovely. Fantastico.
Brilliant, bitter-sweet, beautiful..... Lovely fun Fab! A great Film.
Ma che bella storia! Grazie tante! Light Italian comedy - wonderful
Subtitle; But what a beautiful story. Many thanks.
Lovely poignant film.
Loved everything about this film! Including the music. Lovely. Very enjoyable.
Very well acted, good story.
Enjoyed it but hoped for La Cage aux Folles.

Very moving but hardly comedic. Wonderful camera work.
Pasta-licious. - I liked the old Dad.
I can sympathise with Tommaso's problem with the pasta factory. I had my fill of it after a week in Italy. Real Italy.
Stereotype piled on stereotype. Occasionally very funny but in a guilty sort of way.

A feel good film with serious undertones.
Confused at the end. Just a little too explicit. Fun, amazingly funny with a twist.
Enjoyable and funny - if a bit confusing. Good fun - in spite of the complicated ending!
Nice film. Clever epilogue device.
The blend of comedy and drama did not always work but the lending of different eras was brilliant. We probably missed quite a bit by not knowing what the songs were about. Poor Teresa!
A slow start and an overlong end but some good bits in the middle, once we worked out who was who.

If a film is really good (like last week's) I don't notice how uncomfortable the seats are. The seats were pretty hard tonight!
It held my attention all through. A lovely colourful film.
Loved it, although some of the ultimate moralising was too deep for my understanding!
Subtle, beautiful, uplifting!
Very beautiful - lovely music. Quite poignant too.
It went through the whole range of emotions - sensitive - humorous - thought provoking and such beautiful people.

Good to re-visit Lecce! I want to see it again tomorrow
But who got the girl?

The next film will be Of Gods and Men on Wednesday September 28th beginning at 7.45 p.m.

Terrific start to the season. Brilliant! There's no substitute for a first class western.

Better than I expected, I loved the original but was pleasantly surprised. Great film. Loved it. Fantastic filming; great actors; lovely story.

One of the best Coen brothers' film I have seen. The actress that played Mattie Ross senior wasn't a patch on Hailee Steinfeld. Unusual film with a stunning performance by a 14 year old. Wonderful start to the season. Just as good on the second viewing as on the first.
A great start to what looks like a superb season.
At last! A western with no cows but Jeff and Hailee delivered grittily!

Jeff Bridges, legend - The Dude abides. Excellent - was that really Jeff Bridges?

Violence and jokey dialogue; the first True Grit was a better film.

Come back Clint......all is forgiven. Snatches of good, bad and ugly ...Too loud.

Enjoyable film but I found the 'Quakerish language' at odds with the western location.

Excellent acting and photography.

And now for the great Subtitles debate............

Subtitles probably essential! Subtitles - useful!

<span style="font-family: Cambria; Too loud! Subtitles are useful. Subtitles are a great idea.

<span style="font-family: Cambria; Necessary to have subtitles - good idea. Subtitles :-) Subtitles very useful. Subtitles were invaluable but sound too loud.

<span style="font-family: Cambria;
A great script which would have been spoilt without subtitles. They are a great idea. Thanks!
The subtitles helped. Liked the subtitles.
After a short while the subtitles disappeared.

And yes, it did need the subtitles. Subtitles OK

No preference either way - 10

I for one could hear every word. Thought subtitles quite helpful - don't mind either way.

Not a good test for subtitles because the 'American' delivery was slow and clear in this particular film. However, the sound was terribly loud.

The dialogue in this particular film is slow and clear, so this was not a good test. But I think in many American films that I have seen, subtitles would have been a great help.

On the whole I would prefer without subtitles but in this film they really helped. I found the sound track on this film easy to understand but most American films would benefit from subtitles.

Subtitles are useful but would not like them generally. Though subtitles are quite helpful, I don't mind either way. Subtitles not necessary this time but will be in future I'm sure! Subtitles needed at times

Con subtitles - 10

I'm not convinced about the subtitles. Bit distracted by the subtitles. Distracted by subtitles.

On balance I'd prefer no subtitles with this film but I can see some benefits.

Good film with diction not as poor as I'd expected. Subtitles not necessary - Americans should make films with better diction or we shouldn't have to watch them!! Subtitles distracting - sorry.

I think I prefer no subtitles. No subtitles. Subtitles rather distracting and volume too loud

No subtitles. Thank you so much. What a way to end the season. Perfect!

Very amusing. A good ending to the year. Great fun. Best of breed!

Well found! The previous film was Up in the Air)

Romain Duris was fantastic! The film was great fun.

A fun ending to the season - he was very dishy, except when he cried!!

Nice change to have a light hearted film.

A nice comic touch to end the season. Fun Movie. Light entertainment.
Very funny in parts but overlong for the material – slight overall.
A potentially grim subject made into a very quirky and enjoyable film.

It was a nice critique of the corporate life!
Don’t sell your soul to a man. Never believe a woman!
Not great but a comment on individualism – or should I say a warning!

Inconsequential fluff with pretensions. The separate elements did not gel together at all. Nice aerial shots.
Entertaining but not great.
A rather predictable thesis! Still enjoyable.
Trite, predictable, visually uninteresting, even monotonous: one or two amusing lines but overall I wanted to jump off a bridge myself!
Interesting but limited.

Predictable story line – acting OK but nothing special. I actually found it a bit boring – like his life.
George is to acting like wood to a puppet. Come back Michael Caine.
Natalie’s whining voice and the usual American film poor diction spoilt and otherwise passable film.
The dialogue wasn’t very clear; even after all your valiant efforts.
I prefer Clooney’s “Big head-waggling, saucer-eyed comedies”.

Thanks that did me some good!
OK, but I’m glad I didn’t pay for a ticket at the cinema for it.
What a hell of a job.
Makes you appreciate the Job Centre.
Did I miss something?
Give me a morbid film with a sad ending!
PLEASE can people keep mobile phones off.
I have nothing to say.

The next film Heartbreaker is preceded by the AGM on Thursday, April 7th at 7. 00p.m. There will be an opportunity to air comments on the new venue, the refreshments and the absence of shorts this season. Totally absorbing. Lovely club.
Heartbreaking. Very good but very sad. We must always do our best.

Many complex issues – how sad. Sad at the end: I’m glad I’m English.
So Mona ends up in an arranged marriage, knowing that the person who loved her died trying to get to her….
And they all lived….. Sad but enjoyable.
I almost hoped for a happy ending!
So much in life depends on where you are born. One of the saddest films I have seen.
More like this please. So many issues covered – sensitively done.
I don’t need this: life is sad enough. I want films that make me happy.
Something happier next time please.

Showed the power of an individual story.
Predictable story – nicely acted and photographed.
An affecting tale, well told. Good choice.
Thought provoking – what a difficult world we live in. Very moving. Superb acting and direction.
All the more powerful for being understated. Very well acted indeed.
Brilliant acting – very moving. Loved the music. Very sad but compelling with superb acting.

Well-judged. Cast a light on a nearly invisible (unseen) situation.
Very moving and especially interesting information about detention camps, rules regarding helping illegals, forced marriages in the UK.
The human driftwood of our vile actions overseas – hope some of the others really make it next time.
Heartbreaking. How can kindness be illegal?
We live in a privileged society. I had no idea the French had such wicked laws.
The French did not behave as our media implied.!
Another haunting allegory ( along with Un Prophete) on France and its ills.
Very moving story – a good insight into what goes on across the Channel.
Absorbing and believable – what would I have done? Good choice.
A lesson about compassion and humanity for all.

Utter tosh from the makers of la-la land. Total waste of space. Why did I stay?
Great improvement on the last one.
Simon’s ex-wife must have the same hairdresser as Helena Bonham-Carter. Very poignant.
You don’t very often see French people that scruffy.

The next film will be Up in the Air on Thursday March 24th.

The White Ribbon

What you thought of The White Ribbon

Excellent: 15

Good: 27

Average: 12

Poor: 4

Very Poor: 2

Approval rating: 70%

An enigma! Very haunting and fascinating. Deafening. Utterly dull.
Oppressive, abusive, sick people. Wonderful and very moving. Uncomfortable.
Sheer agony to watch – can’t imagine how it won an award. Too loud also! Interesting!
Absorbing – much better than Black Swan. Hard to watch. Unresolved.

Different but who did it?
The kids did it.
Oh dear, what a depressing film. Probably very good in various ways but I certainly didn’t enjoy it.
Excellent acting but it needed a dénouement.
Much darker than I had envisaged and not a very satisfactory ending.
No glamour, just a damn good film. A beautifully executed tale of mystery and intrigue.
Too long; well- acted but with no outcome it was rather depressing.
Wonderful photography but too deep and meaningful for me. Obscure. Too loud.
Atmospheric film, superb cinematography but not my kind of film.

Well done but infinitely depressing. When do we get episode 2?
An everyday story of country folk!! But glad we stayed to see it – after reading your résumé we nearly went straight home. At least no one fell off a roof….
Where was Miss Marple when you needed her? Vorsprung dürch Hanging Rock (Prefiguring Hanging Rock)
It was like Village of the Damned.
Explosive start! Confusing in parts but strangely compelling. Midwich Cuckoos?
Buddenbrooks meets Hammer House of Horror!
A German Lord of the Flies?

Let’s hope they all died in the Great War. Bloody Germans. A bit Teutonic! (sound was very shrill)
Why was the film made? There didn’t seem to be a reason.
A village with circles of evil percolating to all levels with “proprieties” preventing intervention and preserving the evil intact. The no telling tales culture.
Interesting insight to the period before the First World War.

I thought it would never end! My seat got harder and harder. A nightmare.
Brilliant and terrifying – even more so on this my second time.
Came in happy – went home distressed. Very strange but riveting.
Very strange but strangely compelling. I do see why it was in black and white.
Strange film, someone should write an ending. Not for the first time I wonder why that generation of parents ever had children.
Weird – too long but beautifully photographed and sound excellent.

I would like to see it again.
What the hell was that?
Strange. Can’t categorize.

The next film will be Welcome on March 17th at the School Hall.

BURMA VJ

What you thought of Burma VJ:

Excellent: 40

Good: 4

Total response 98% positive reaction.

Thanks to the committee for a fascinating evening.
Engrossing. Lucky us. What a story. “Gob smacking” Atmospheric.
What an extremely humbling film. We must all hope that things will improve.
Thank you for showing it.

Camera work under world-class stress – highly atmospheric.
A night and a film I shan’t easily forget. A great use of film.
Historic film, for method and content. Fantastic choice - thanks very much.
A remarkable film and indicative of the power of communication.
The scariest film I have ever seen. Thanks.
Astonishing, thought-provoking. What a powerful weapon a camera can be!
Remarkable – the most gripping and moving film I’ve seen. Superb editing to develop understanding and tension.

What an eye – opener! Thank you Joshua.
Excellent more for the courage than the quality.
Far from the usual type of film – but what an evening. I don’t think I would have had that sort of courage.
What a brave man Joshua is. I hope his cause succeeds.
Compelling, powerful and immensely informative. Thank you for showing this film.
Inspiring and humbling – brilliant material. Thank you for choosing this film.
An extraordinary opportunity to understand more about the situation in Burma.

Hoping that this time of tragedy will turn into something great. In time it must.
The film conveyed the reality of the current situation in Burma. It is difficult to see how military power can be overthrown.
After that what can I say? I just feel humble about my own freedom.
Brave film makers. Things have to change in Burma.
Inspirational. Can we do something to support his work?
How can we help them? How lucky we are to be British.
Such a moving documentary. It only highlights the oppression that is existing in Joshua’s country.

Where was Spartacus?

Thank you for putting that on.

Impossible to assess that film but a deeply moving evening.

The next film will be The White Ribbon on Thursday March 3rd. at Blandford School.

A Prophet

What you thought of A Prophet.

Excellent: - 12

Good: - 18

Average: - 1

Poor: - 2

Porridge without the laughs (plus blood –lots!)
But I don’t like such violence. Scary! Very gripping though.
Good technically, boring as entertainment. Bon Chance! Full Marks.
Powerful. Far too long. Excellent and powerful.

Too long but a good tale. Riveting –but far too long for me!
Brilliant acting but tough to watch.
Tahar Rahim was extremely convincing and the story compelling, if shocking.

Crime certainly doesn’t pay in France.
Does prison reform or just refine the criminal? Has Ken Clark seen this?
A bleak allegory of France – as it is or as it might become?
I now see where penalties can land you so I’ll be more sober on holiday!
Makes ordinary law-abiding life seem flat and goody goody.

Provocative, controversial ….a worthy winner of the Grand Prix.
Too long, confusing plot, more than a bit pretentious. Well made and all that , but maybe only French bourgeois guilt can explain all the prizes.
I can understand why it won all the awards. Excellent acting and script. A bit too long though.

Lived up to expectations.

What a nasty film.

I feel as if I’ve done 6 years.

The next film will be Burma VJ on February 17th.at Blandford school's new hall. Outstanding. Lovely. Deeply moving.
Delightful – a real gem. A very enjoyable film. Beautiful, piff, paff, puff!
A magnificent film throughout ! Beautiful film – lovely music.
A sad story beautifully done.

Wonderful photography. Stunning. Wonderful acting, beautiful photography. It’s what cinema is all about. A very atmospheric, moving film.
Beautiful photography and very subtle characterisation.
Superb – a masterpiece – wonderfully acted and sensitive. A study in nobility.
A beautiful and poignant film yet understated, Beautiful and enigmatic.
A beautiful film – enhanced by a subtle use of colour.
Beautifully told and photographed. Brilliant photography and photographer.

So many layers – superb. (I saw The King’s Speech this week and enjoyed this more!)
Superb acting, very atmospheric and thoroughly enjoyable.
Picture in picture.
Great film and I loved the CD before the film.

Great choice – thanks very much. A Hardy-esque tale of a wronged woman almost broken by forces beyond her control. Beautifully photographed – very reminiscent of those Swedish prints from that era.
A very moving story of love and perseverance.
A film with everything – moral, realism and real loving. Where is the rest of the film world?
An excellent film of love loss and redemption.
A gem of a film with a very light touch. Wonderful story and gorgeous to look at.
Absolutely first rate. Photography superb and the story was very sensitively handled – superb!

More like this please.
If this was on TV, I would have watched 20 minutes and then off. As it was I saw it all in its painful dullness.
I liked it.
Charming. Why not on general release as it could apply to many of today’s families in England. What I came to the club to see.
A lovely film. What I come to the film society for!

The next film will be A Prophet on February 4th at Blandford school hall.

Nowhere Boy

What you thought of Nowhere Boy:

Excellent - 31

Good - 30

Average - 5

Overall rating - 85%

Very enjoyable. Fine acting and interesting story. Destined for tragedy.
Terrific! Thanks for the Greatest Show on Earth. Very enjoyable.
A big improvement on Ian Drury. Great!

Fabulous acting – brilliant set and scene making and what a star Jonny Aaron is. Music of course from my youth! Magic.
An average film raised onto a higher plane by the inimitable Kristin Scott Thomas.
More an older Tom Jones than a young John Lennon.
I loved the storyline. Brilliant acting by the women.
Great film. Great music. Kristin Scott Thomas – wow! Beautifully acted.
An interesting film particularly well-played by the two women!! Good lads!
No wonder he ended up rather weird! Kristin Scott Thomas was superb as usual.

Too many views of him coming out of gates! Miserable backgrounds do seem to breed geniuses.
I felt it lacked tension and relied too heavily on us knowing what he would become.
I was strangely unmoved. Seemed genuine and touching in places.
Quite a good story averagely told.
I agree with The Guardian critic – good but staged in parts. Well done for coping with the problems.

“All you need is Love”. Congratulations on the 1950s style projector problems: - perfectly reproduced!!
Thanks for getting it back together again. Loved the film but I find the screen rather high (sorry).
Well done – a quick recovery with the DVD and a great venue.
Engrossing in spite of the gremlins. Some excellent performances – very enjoyable in spite of the break!
Rather enjoyable, I liked the music. The story was getting more interesting when it went – glad it come back.
What a relief after last week! Thanks for the diversity of films.
Very good – in spite of the jam on the disk. Well done the production team!

A tellingly poignant account of an unusual triangle but did the ending fall into the sentimental.
I am not sure how true to the real story it was. The John Lennon character appeared not to be the main character in the film.
The film answered all the questions about John Lennon’s later life. Super film.
Explains a lot! I will look at Julia with another level of understanding now!
A much better film than I expected, having grown up with the music.
A brilliant film in every way. Thank you for rescuing it!
A gripping and enjoyable trip down memory lane.

Brilliant! Confusion and violence squared – CV2
Bleak, relentless though undeniably powerful. It was another war film.
The sheer power of the USA. Would they be that stupid to go looking for trouble?

Hand held – even the bomb trigger. On the balcony who got the video from the guy up there?
It certainly brings home what the troops have to cope with.
It’s all there, the devastation, the violence and the horror of war. The soldiers’ testosterone and adrenaline keeps them going. Brilliant acting – like a documentary. Superb acting.
Brilliant everything – acting, story, direction – 1st. class.

A powerful film reminding me of the horrors and futility of war.
Full of real feeling and utterly unsentimental. Oh the horrors of war.
The awfulness of it..... the waste of it…..the pity of it…………a brilliant film.
The horror! The horror! The futility of war.
Let’s hope it ends soon!
In substance a good film but oh the hysteria.

The Oscars were deserved – a great filmic team.
Deserves Oscars for gratuitous violence and tacky sentimentality. I am disappointed that the committee could choose such a dreadful film. The sound was also very loud (though not distorted) Ear plugs next week.
Well deserved accolades. (It was so hot in the hall: it added to the feel of the film!)
Powerful. Not my kind of film but I can understand why it won so many awards. What a f***ing world we have!

Fantastic film! I feel as if I’ve been right in the action for the last two hours! I’ve only just survived!
Palpable tension almost throughout – can’t imagine living it!
Glad I saw it but hard to watch.
A very good view of modern warfare but not good for peace of mind.
Draining – but well worth the experience.

A film not to be missed. I don’t think I enjoyed it but I’m glad I saw it.

[ Apologies to all those members who found Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘restless camera pinging frenetically’ nausea inducing. Several people were reluctant to disturb the film by leaving, so writhed silently]

The next film will be Nowhere Boy on January 20th at the new Blandford school hall.

The Red Shoes

What you thought of The Red Shoes:

Excellent: 19

Good: 7

Average: 1

Splendid entertainment – lovely to see it again!
Seen at aged 9 and again at 69 – feel that floor! Brilliant: it used the pain of emotion to make a drama out of what could be drill! A shoo-in!
It brought back happy memories.
Amazing film for that time – only two years after the war. Well worth seeing again 60 years later.
Terrific – a great film in every way.

A bold choice – thanks!
A superb film. Wonderful cinematography. A film well before its time.
Excellent film but I’m afraid I found it rather long.
Wonderful. Beautifully renovated.
Excellent for the genre. The usual gripe about the poor sound but luckily the music made up for it!
Pity the music was too loud; otherwise a good story.

As a spectacle it was superb: the acting was very much of the 1940s.
Elocution did not come over too well but pleasant in every other way.
A beautiful film but so sad! .
They don’t make them like that any more!
Perfect. Long Glorious
A wonderful end to the year.

The next film is The Hurt Locker at Blandford School Hall on January 13th.

A Serious Man

What you thought of the film:

Excellent: 14
Good: 18
Average: 17
Poor: 8
Very Poor: 4

Overal Rating: 62%

Incoherent – or is it me? Intriguing! Yawn!! Brilliant!
Great fun, at times sad but also humorous with great pathos. Typical Coen Bros.
What a waste of an evening. Always leaves me wanting more. Weird but quite good.
Usual bizarre, ugly Coen case – good in parts but bitty. Boring rubbish.
Serious themes but funny too. Worth trying but no thanks.
Superb! Refreshingly intelligent and original with such an ominously effective ending: I loved it.

Once again problems with the sound. Boring, boring, boring. Sound bad again!
Could we please have subtitles? Very humorous but missed quite a lot because of the sound.
Some funny bits but is it the acoustics; the sound track; the accent or just mumbling? There were parts I could not understand, leaving me as frustrated and puzzled as Larry Gopnik.
Some poor diction – nice comic touches. Overall too weird for me.
Probably quite a good film- pity about the sound track. Again, poor sound quality.
Ditto last time – American as a foreign language needs subtitles. Diction??
Can we have subtitles all the time? Understood the Yiddish part much better than the American…
Michael Stuhlbarg was excellent, as were the other actors, though the sound track was loud!
What an ugly, unattractive cast. Hard to warm to their fate.
Great, if hardly uplifting but the dialogue was difficult to hear again.
Amusing, if a bit stereotypical. Clearer but there were still problems with the sound quality.

Too annoying for words. Slightly better than the last film.
Better than last time but the sound still spoilt it.
Might have had something if the sound had been better.
Have to go back and start reading my Philip Roth! Very Diasporic!
Very evocative of the community.

Story very disjointed; it didn’t live up to Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
Entertaining but exhausting. The first five minutes were the best!!
A memorable finale. Who hasn’t tried marijuana yet?
Sorry – didn’t get the ‘ending’...will think about it later. Great film – but I wish it had a happier ending!
Not my favourite – but the edgy uncertainty of life was painfully observed – yet again!
More life than anything yet. So real. So much frustration was piled on - his day was not made!!
A scary funny film – I suppose you have to laugh at the chaos –but rather them than me.
Very enjoyable and poignant but I did not appreciate members leaving before the credits had finished.

Appalling – the last two films were both bad. Who chooses these?
One of the worst. Oh, help me! Oi vay.

The next film is Everlasting Moments at Durweston on December 2nd.

Frozen River

Excellent: 0
Good : 9
Average: 16
Poor: 10
Very Poor: 14

Total reaction: 35%

If I’d been able to see or hear what was going on, it might have been good!
“Rusty” lighting could have found a few more glow-worms and subtitles in Canadian English.
A nice story ruined by appalling diction and sound. Too dark – sound and dialogue poor.
Might have enjoyed it more if I could have seen it and heard what they were saying.
The story was powerful but it was visually difficult to watch at times and the diction was very por. It was very different- it was a pity the diction was so poor as I missed so much. Very basic. Very dark.
I couldn’t understand about 75% of the vocal content. The lighting was terrible and I couldn’t follow the story line.

Oh for subtitles!! Could have done with subtitles! Dark – can’t hear it. Rubbish!
No story line. Very poor, we couldn’t hear what was being said: just completely like a hard jigsaw.
Couldn’t understand what they were saying for 75% of the time. Why was it shot in the dark? Not a great story line. Awful – couldn’t see; couldn’t hear. Perhaps the budget was too low.
Needed subtitles. Needed more money spent on lighting and also subtitles.
Could have done with subtitles! Glad I’d read the notes.
Looked good when it wasn’t too dark to see. Could have done with subtitles.

Too dark to follow much of the action.
A pity the budget didn’t run to some more light and subtitles would have helped.
Too dark and as I could not understand the dialogue, I didn’t get much out of it.
Bored! Very, very disappointing. Could not see and could not understand the dialogue.
I might have been interested if I could see and understand what they were saying!!
A wasted evening. Dark and incomprehensible rubbish. Very, very poor.
Could not understand very much. So boring!

Found it hard to hear all the dialogue. Quite bleak but, as always, interesting to see.
I think I’ll need to see it all. At times it was visually and audibly incomprehensible.
Couldn’t hear what they said or see what they did.
One of the worst films I have ever seen. It might have been filmed down a mine. Where were the subtitles to the mumbled and incoherent text? On TV I could have turned it off!
Subtitles might have helped, as the sound was so poor but so too was the photography and the plot was thin. It should have stayed as a short.
The worst yet because of the soundtrack. Only people who have spent time in Canada could possibly have understood it. A budget film with a budget sound track. Is it too much to ask that when choosing films you check the soundtrack or switch on subtitles , if the DVD has them.

Might be good, if I had seen and heard what went on.
For a film which was mostly shot in the dark, and which featured largely incomprehensible dialogue, I suppose it wasn’t that bad.
Sound not clear, good story. Could you please ask people not to stand at the end, some of us like to read the credits. Difficult to hear and see. Was it a good film?
Such a shame it was difficult to see and hear what was going on, but otherwise I enjoyed the film.

The next film at Durweston will be A Serious Man on November 18th.

Four Minutes

What you thought of Four Minutes:

Excellent: 61

Good: 10

No other categories received a vote. Absolutely brilliant.
Fantastic. Truly magnificent. Brilliant! Lovely music. Superb.
Brilliant. Best film for years! Gripping. Fantastic – best film ever.
Exhausting to watch – excellent. Riveting. A lot to think about. Totally absorbing, brilliant.
Bit Bleak. Decent film, good music. This ranks as one of my top 10 films.
Long Distance Runner’s entrapped sister. Brilliant. Unusual / Outstanding.

Stunning – I can see why Graham rushed back from Edinburgh to see it!
I too would race back from Scotland to see it for the third time.
Absolutely amazing! One of the best films you have shown us. Film telling a story intelligently.
Best yet. Faultless suspense and everything else from beginning to end.
Romantic realism; a little predictable in places but beautifully shot and superbly acted.

Sensational – up there with the best films ever!! Powerful, courageous performances.
A mind-blowing and powerful film from all aspects.
Powerful is too weak a word for this remarkable film. It was like an assault – violence heaped on pain again and again.
Hard work, hard on the bum but all worthwhile. A powerful film with complex emotions.

How much longer will Germany feel the need to self-flagellate?
This is a difficult film – I mean to see it again. Outstanding performances and the music was superb.
Truly great film – marvellous acting – really didn’t know how it would turn out.
Excellent! And I’ll add that Jenny had fingers and fists of fury.
Glad it was not in Hollywood’s hands. Fantastic performances by both leading actresses.
Superb acting – A second viewing would strengthen ones appreciation.
Almost unbearable to watch. I cannot remember ever being held so brutally by a film – magnificent.
Wonderful music – a film that totally held the attention in spite of struggling to read the subtitles.
She moved through the interstices of the prison system (with the grand piano) and the international competition with considerable ease. Did this seem convincing? NEARLY DEAFENED AT FRONT!

Hit that ivory sis – and forget the fat applicant.
How silly to ask me for words.
Not sure if I liked it or not – but great performances!

The next film will be Frozen River on November 4th at Durweston.

Broken Embraces

What you thought of Broken Embraces:

Excellent: - 20
Good: - 29
Average: - 10
Poor: - 4

Total respose: 76%

Penelope Cruz! Totally Captivating Very different Interesting, engrossing
Oooh the tits and not a lot else. Escapism in escapism. Absorbing but needed lighter editing.
Unusual and very enjoyable: I love foreign films.

A confusing film – but that didn’t matter. Who’d be a mistress?
The story lacked the vitality of Volver but it was still dramatic, beautifully shot and a stunning film.
Cruz, as ever in her own language, is breathtaking.
I’d need to see it again to pick up the loose threads. Most enjoyable.
Disappointing ending, too many coincidences, too many loose ends tied up. Life’s not like that.
Love the music, the tragedy, the humour and the sex! She is so beautiful!
Hitchcock meets Blow-Up, updated for the 21st century.

Usual earthy Almodovar – good.
This is the second time I’ve seen it and it’s as atmospheric as ever. Almodovar never fails.
Brilliant! I loved the acting, photography and storyline. Superb, I could watch it again.
Too much movie – making flashback. Too artful: the art is to hide the art.
A thoroughly engaging collection of events that critique the nature of art, obsession and cinema. Good stuff.
Typical Almodovar. Boring – tedious – pointless.
Endless complexity of films within films and funny in parts but not as significant as his earlier films.
Terrible ending – slow – badly paced – not very exciting – poor script.
Too long. An over indulgence on the part of Pedro Almodovar.

Couldn’t read the subtitles (too low) so hadn’t a clue – waste of an evening.
Think it was a good film but couldn’t see the subtitles.
Couldn’t see/read the subtitles.
Pity sitting at the back, couldn’t read the subtitles. Confused by the film but it was enjoyable. Too many flashbacks.
If only I were tall enough to read the subtitles throughout.

In spite of constantly being irritated by the obvious visual trickery, the two hours flew by.
Really absorbing for the first hour and a half.
Too long but always worth watching. Long and self-indulgent.
Long but not boring. A bit long and self-indulgent but very enjoyable.
Apart from being an hour and a half too long, it was very good and well-acted.

Cancel that holiday in the USA! Book me Madrid with a Hasselblad!
He does have a thing about mothers.
A good film at last.

the next film will be Four minutes on October 21st. at Durweston Village Hall.

Sex 'n Drugs 'n Rock 'n Roll

Yout thought:

Excellent: 25

Good: 12

Average: 5

Very Poor: 1

Total response: 85%

1 2 3 Fucking Brilliant!! Manic Wah I’d seen him live in concert.
Clever film. Diamond geezer. Fanspastic. Migraine inducing!
Great! So full of energy! Brilliant film and fantastic acting. Thank you! What a shambles.
Fuckin’ brilliant. Very moving but astonishing. Who fucking picked that?
Just as good the second time of seeing this - great!!
Enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Fantastic acting.

Superb acting both of Dury and Baxter! Brilliant portrayal.
Excellent performances and clever filming. Serkis was amazing.
Andy Serkis was brilliant – a very absorbing film. What superb acting - f***ing brilliant.
Inspired by Joel Gray in Cabaret? I thought Andy Serkis was mesmerizing.
Faultless and very gripping. Andy Serkis was brilliant.
Very well acted but why bother? “Fuck off! You’re fired! Now go away and be magnificent.”

The comic book style was a touch of genius. Who would have thought a rebel would wear such cool knitwear?
It’s all in the jeans. Brilliant - but possibly only for those who like the music.
Heard all. It was a tragic drama of a driven over-achiever against the odds but without the courage to be human.
It was a refreshingly unsentimental exploration of possible attitudes towards disability.
Wow! The moral of the story is: sink or swim. And what a swimming life and film.

Manic but I loved it! The sound is still blurry but it’s the film.
Aside from an issue with the screen ratio; a very good film.
Good because it was clever. Come back Gollum – all is forgiven. The film was as chaotic as Dury’s life – I’d forgotten how much I hated the punk era! I couldn’t hear and therefore understand a lot of the dialogue – that made it worse.
A blow to the solar plexus – more like being in a theatre than a film.
Boring film, rotten man.

Depicted the era well.
Cracking good film – what an era!
A reason to be cheerful!

The next film will be Broken Embraces dir: Pedro Almodovar on Thursday October 9th.

An Education

What you thought of An Education

Excellent : 39
Good : 16
Average : 8

Total response : 87%

It’s good to be back. What a start! Good start to the season. Lovely Beautiful!
Great, Lovely film …..good choice! Most moving. Lovely Stunning
TERRIFIC, TERRIFIC, TERRIFIC !!! Ooh aah - a crackaah!

Very nostalgic – it could have been me – but it wasn’t.
Oh! Would I have been like that at 16?!
I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was as if the last 40 years never were!!!
Memories! Sobranies and Bristols ( the rare models). Can’t go back alas!
As a sad reminder as to how dull life really was – but most of us didn’t know any different.
My era – I almost did all of it.
A good film to start the new season. Some excellent acting bringing to life the memories of a period I had almost forgotten!

At last I’ve seen it! And it lived up to expectations. Many thanks.
Second time I’ve seen it – just as brilliant the second time.
Very much enjoyed it – a very good start to the season!
Was it me or are the acoustics bad at Durweston village hall?
Beautifully acted – first class but the sound was awful!
Better the second time but the sound was difficult.
It was a real quality performance by Mulligan. Difficult to hear the words. Could this be improved?

A half decent film. Food for thought. Less gritty than the build up from TV!
Predictable and disappointing. Slow and predictable.
An old scenario well-portrayed! A wonderful start to the season.
The plot was rather simple and predictable until the glove compartment then it was tighter.
Fantastic acting, remarkable set, original story. Really very good.
Was it an ego trip for Lynn Barber?

Just fantastic – brilliant acting. Great acting and a good ending!
I didn’t realise David Cameron was an actor in his day job!
Molina was outstanding. Miss Pike as a dumb blonde?
Wow! My childhood! (I was that embarrassed young lad – Graham)
Whatever happened to Graham? Did he become a famous author?
An excellent start to the season. Cary Mulligan was like a small Audrey Hepburn.

Excellent opener. More like this please. Excellent . Give us more! more! more!
Very evocative of the 60’s. Thank goodness attitudes to women’s education have changed.
Oh, she got in so it’s all OK.
Ah, if only she’d applied to Cambridge!

The next film is Sex n' Drugs n' Rock n' Roll at Durweston Village Hall on September 23rd, at 7.45.

Welome Back

Welcome to our new season and to Durweston Village Hall! Tres bien A great romp of a film
Fantastic – best film so far. That was a film!
Most enjoyable – a good feel-good factor to finish the year. That was fun.
F***ing good! A great film for people who like swearing. That was f***ing good.
Too much F word – enjoyed the fight at the end.

More a TV film than a cinema film. Nevertheless, great acting, very amusing and a good evening.
Great fun (although it was difficult to understand Cantona)
Fab. I really enjoyed it. Great acting.
Excellent film to finish the year with. It had everything. Pity about Eric Cantona’s diction!!

An everlasting spliff……I wish. Only wish mob rule worked as well.
A nice little fairy tale! I always wanted to know what a Postmen’s strike would be like!!
Great fun but with some serious underlying themes. Great dénouement.
Quite brilliant although I did not think so to begin with.

A film of two halves. What a way to end the season – thanks!
I loved the film even though I’m not a football fan. Top League!
Brilliant! And I don’t follow football!
Brilliant……should have had extra time.

Surprising! A perfect end of season fodder – funny and poignant and Loach to a T.
Spoiled a good season.
Good in every respect. The Best. Thank you.

Thank you for you support this season. And what was the point of it all or was it just Woody’s wish list?
Somewhat tedious. Great fun. Holiday romances never last. Engrossing.
Priceless! Una pelicula muy buena! (Subtitle: A very good film)
Not profound but great fun. Tedious. Great fun.

I spent the time working out which of the pretentious, boring characters I would shoot first. Miss Johansson could have done with some acting lessons from Ms Cruz. Then I'd shoot her.
An easy watch but not a great film – except for Cruz of course.
Not enough of the Cruz missile.
A good film?? Who cares – Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz!
This film has convinced me that I was born 40 years too soon!
Doesn’t Diane Keaton age well?!!!

Wonderful travelogue of Barcelona but I was not too impressed with the film.
Much ado about nothing! But beautiful to look at. Off to Barcelona!
Great bad commentary! Took me back to student days!
Think I will plan a trip to Barcelona! Quite amusing but I wouldn’t want to see the film again.
After a lousy day it was fun!
When can I return to this great city?

I felt sorry for the actors trying to deal with a rubbish production.
Not too sure about it. Not even funny. Quite a good story but not believable.
Thank God for the architecture.
It explored all the human emotions from A to B. Fell Asleep!

Rather predictable Woody Allen. Pity about the silly voice over. Woody Allen’s wish fulfilment?
The commentary felt like Woody Allen lecturing at me. I didn’t like the format.
Woody Allen is not all he’s cracked up to be: a shallow, pretentious film.
Not enough of Barcelona and Gaudi but too much Woody Allen cross conversation.
Stunning scenery but typical Woody Allen fantasy. Very Woody Allen.
When you’re admiring the wardrobe more than the film………Fun though!
Excellent direction. The sex scenes were not too graphic for a change.
Vintage Allen – just bananas.
Is this Woody Allen making fun of himself?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

NEXT FILM –- This is Looking for Eric on Thursday March 25th and will follow the AGM which begins at 7.15 p.m.
The committee will shortly begin the difficult task of selecting the programme for next season. Long lists will be compiled and short lists scrutinised. The debate will range far and wide until the early hours.
This is your last chance to have your selection considered. Please write your suggestions on the back of the reaction slips. So far 42 films have been put forward but they may not include any of your favourites!

Emma's Bliss

What you thought of Emma's Bliss

Excellent: - 48

Good: - 26

Average: - 1

Overal Rating: 91%

A charming story well-acted. Beautiful Charming, delightful film
A perfect tale. Very moving – sensitively produced. A treasure.
Haunting and charming in equal measure. Good: thought provoking. That was lovely.
A beautiful sensitive film. More like that please. Truly wonderful.
Very enjoyable. Magnificent.

A little too realistic. I’ve seen wurst! Very good and enchanting story.
Sehr schön, nicht whar? Gentle. Could have done without the music at the end.
Well acted, peculiar and not as profound as it obviously thought it was.
A tragedy ‘with funny bits’ – not a comedy.
Very clever filming – comical in parts and certainly memorable. Funny, sad and very original.
So similar to our very own Dorset cottage holidays! Great situational comedy.
Rather a different film from the usual ‘bloody’ films. Very sweet and beautifully directed.
Very touching. If that was a feral woman we need more of them!
An amazing and perfect film – a story well told.
What I came to film club for. Unusual, touching and with gentle humour – excellent.

Unusual, rather sweet and funny but sad for the pigs!
Very touching. I think it will be a while before I can eat pork again.
You can’t beat a good German sausage!
An original love story with all the harshness of ordinary life.
Best German film shown at BFFS. A wonderful bitter-sweet story, beautifully filmed and acted.
Who said the Germans have no sense of humour! Delightful.
I did enjoy that and kept the tears until she looked at us at the last.
Gentle Emma with the knife. I thought she would cut out his pancreas.
BAFTAs for Emma, Babe and the cockerel. Best so far.

A real mixture of emotions!
Clearly it’s better to have loved and lost.
The best you have ever booked. Thank you.

The next film is Vicky Christina Barcelona on March 18th. This is the film which was 'snowed off' in early January.

Paris Je t'aime

What you thought of Paris je t'aime:

Excellent: 21
Good : 47
Average: 6
Poor: 1
Very Poor: 1

Delightful, a garden of flowers. Fantastic – like eating a box of chocolates in one go!
Very moving, interesting and exciting. I loved it. Mostly delightful thumbnails.
Delightful, Very entertaining and varied. Trés interessant. A fun collage
Unusual. Vin Ordinaire! I hate Paris Pointless!

A melange which proved a total artistic ensemble: wonderful experience – where’s the Eurostar offer?
Unusual and very enjoyable. Recognisable Paris. Magical Paris
Fun – perhaps overlong – but an interesting collage about Paris.
An astonishing kaleidoscope of Paris.
Indeed, the essence of Paris is as elusively enigmatic as the Giaconda’s smile.
Proves that shorts can be good.

A different film. Maybe too fragmented for me. Lip synch again?
Certainly different – a bit long. Different – perhaps too many to grasp fully at one sitting.
Eighteen little gems. A treasure trove. Twelve would have been enough for me.
Rather fun but like short stories, one wants to know what happens next!
Mixed – too long – could have left some of them out and not missed them.

Hasn’t Marianne Faithfull put on weight?
Spot the stars – varied and charming. A clever idea well-presented.
The variety of subjects, change of pace – all make a wonderfully entertaining film.
Like life – full of small things. An enjoyable mix. Unique but successful.
An interesting concept: somehow it worked but no more vampires please.
Entertaining stuff but not vampires again?!
Quite fun and some quite charming scenes but the characters meant one felt little involvement.
I enjoyed it because it was so different.

Loved, loved, loved it. I really enjoyed that.
Very enjoyable diverse petites filmes!
I wonder why I understood the French in the last vignette (about the post lady on holiday).
Plenty of ideas for a whole film society season.

The next film will be Emmas Gluck on Thursday March 11th.

Il y a longtemps que je t'aime

What you thought of Il y a longtemps que je t'aime:

Excellent: 84
Good: 10

Overall Rating 97%

Brilliant film. The Best Yet. A very good film. Much Better! Magnifique
A compelling film, riveting and absolutely brilliant. Best film this season. Beautiful!
Splendid – as near perfect as possible. A very moving film. Brilliant Magnificent Mesmerising. A very moving film. A very powerful film and very moving.

Brilliant - the best film I’ve seen here. Very good ; an excellent story.
Gorgeous sensitive young actresses and film. Topical and very touching.
Superbly crafted. Treated us with intelligence. Excellent cast. Beautiful, sensitive film. Best film so far.
Brilliant – she is superb (and the others). Beautifully acted. Excellent acting – very moving.

Scott Thomas was amazing.
Great film addressing topical subjects such as dementia and mercy killing en passant.
A difficult subject – very moving and beautifully portrayed. Superb! Very good story and beautifully filmed. Brilliant script . Superb structure.
Everything –music- photography all brilliant but the dénouement? Needed less explanations.
Wonderful performances by both the main actresses. Superbly acted. Simply a masterpiece. Superbly acted.
Best film I’ve seen for ages. K-S-T was excellent.
Kirsten Scott Thomas – excellent in French as she is in English.
If that’s not an Oscar winning performance, I don’t know what is! Marvellous.

Superb film. What an actress! (Or are we supposed to say actor now?) It became fairly obvious why she had killed her son but it was all very sensitively done.
No surprises in the story – guessed she had a reason to kill her son, but still very effective.
I won’t look up all Dostoevsky but two real actresses portrayed life’s types of imprisonment.
Please more of these well-acted, beautifully scripted, thought provoking films.
Beautiful, sensitive, admirable in every way – only the French could do it.
Excellent – what more can you say…except more French films like that next season.
Magnifique – pity it was not Barbara singing at the end!
Colour/light beautifully realised; understated, episodic structure was well-paced, enthralling and moving.
Vaut bien le detour! (Subtitle: Well worth the detour).

So very excellent. One of the best films I’ve ever seen. Superb acting. Faultless.
Excellent or even better. The total stillness and silence during the credits showed the audience reverence for a wonderfully moving film.
Thanks – I needed that. Very healing. Intriguing, if not involving.
Best film for a long time. So sad! Wonderful actors. Thank you! Superb 10 out of 10 for this one.
Best yet. Superb. Why can’t there be more films of this high quality?

The next fim will be Paris je t'aime on Thursday 25th, February.

Let the Right One In

What you thought of Let the Right One In :

Excellent 18
Good 12
Average 8
Poor 7
Very Poor 9

Overal Rating 61%

What’s the Swedish for WOW!? Bloody Hell!! Bloody Great Bloody Weird
Wallander with vampires. Lovely. WIERD (?) WEIRD (?) HMM
One ending too many? Relief when it finished! Long, long, long.
Utterly bizarre
Rubbish.

It was great! Fantastic actors. Can’t say I understood it all but what the hell! Wonderful stuff.
God it was awful! So slow and depressing.
Edge of the seat stuff.
Quite ridiculous – what a waste of my time.
Excellent acting – completely understated. Photography too – how much snow did they have?
Why did we bother? Unpleasant and unrewarding.
Best of the season. Witty. Beautifully filmed. Very enjoyable. If you weren’t here, you missed a real gem.

Quite beyond me – but I think I’m normal!
Oskar for the cats, but I worry that unlike us there is no combined Fire and Rescue service.
I miss the vampire teeth.
Not my cup of blood. I was thinking of getting a cat too!
Not my favourite genre! Too much gore and unpleasant characters. Glad I don’t have cats any more.
An unusual fairy story sealed in BLOOD.
Certainly not something I would have chosen. Comedy, fairy story? But beautifully filmed and acted. No wonder the Swedes drink.

It managed to be vile and boring at the same time. Quite the worst film I have ever seen at BFFC.
I enjoyed it despite the vampire theme. It showed a good way to sort out bullies!
Very atmospheric and actually you didn’t see too much vampire feeding.
It’s really unlucky to have a vampire as your first girlfriend. No awards for him – excellent music.
Like Rubik’s cube, it is puzzling especially with its inconsequential editing.
The acting – Oskar and Eli- was fantastic, but parts were just too horrible for me!
First class acting, clever photography.
Well acted but horrible content.
Not many laughs!

Can I have the 41st. award for sitting through this please? My own fault for not reading the programme notes in advance.
A film of amazing contrasts.
Best film this year.

The next film is on February 11th and is Il y a longtemps que je t'aime

Somers Town

What you thought of Somers Town:

Excellent 15
Good 22
Average 11
Poor 3
Very Poor 2

Overal Rating 72%

The short was good and Somers Town had its moments.
Enjoyed both films. The first one was thought provoking. Somers Town was an interesting glimpse of young hope.
Not as good as I had hoped.
A well-judged juxtaposition of the two films.

A lovely film despite the gremlins!
Definitely a winner – great photography – pity about the breaks.

Delightfully refreshing. A bit too slow. Very funny.
See Eurostar is good at some thing. Quite a moving and enchanting film. Good in parts.
Very charming film in spite of the projection problems.
Boring and juvenile. Oh the power of black and white! A slight but charming film.

Product placement for Eurostar? The format is almost as bad as for Lemon Tree – do we always have to see squat broad people?
Pity about the continuity – inconsequential. Shame ----the----soundtrack.
Was this Meadows on an ‘away day’? Was the copy very poor?
Moderate real life showing the balance between opportunity and boredom. Was this a “Warp Films” special – see the credits at the end.
Out of focus – no sound – and a shite film. Stop and start like Eurostar.

Great soundtrack: Great Acting: Brilliant!
Jules and Jim meet Marek and Tomo!
Wonderful! There’s hope for innocence after all.
There was a lone laugh at the wanking scene – ha, ha, ha,
Great boy actors.
Lovely film!
